The Embassy of Spain in Tokyo and Shigyo Sosyu Collection・Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, in cooperation with Engakuji Temple, the head temple of Engakuji School of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, the University of Salamanca, and the Japan Foundation, will hold “Zen to Bi-Spain kara no Manazashi (Zen and Art- Spain kara no Manazashi (Zen and Art-Reflections from Spanish Viewpoint” Exhibition.(Scheduled Opening period: 10/28 (Sat.) ~ 11/24 (Fri.). [Open] Mon.~ Sat., 11/23 (National holiday). [Closed] Sun., 11/01, 11/3. [Scheduled opening hours] Mon.~ Thu. 10:00~17:00 / Fri. 10:00~16:00 / Sat. 10:00~14:00).
The exhibition features approximately 100 works and materials from Shigyo Sosyu Collection, including Zen calligraphy and paintings by Rinzai Zen master Hakuin Ekaku and Nakahara Nantenbo, as well as contemporary art by Yamaguchi Takeo, Koshino Junko, and others. The exhibition explores its magnetism through Zen art. Please also enjoy the exhibition on the spread and perception of Zen throughout the world, particularly the expansion in Spain.

In addition, to commemorate the Japan-Spain Exchange, the Shigyo Sosyu Display floor・Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa in Kojimachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, under the title of “Wind of Spain”, will exhibit numbers of representative works focusing on Toshima Yasumasa’s 30 years of artworks in Spain, including those produced in collaboration with our gallery after his return to Japan from Spain. Display period is from Oct.03, 2023 ~Jan.26,2024. This will be his solo exhibition in about three years since the Akita Museum of Art “Fire and Blackness of Jomon” Exhibition held in 2020.
In addition, ARTIS No.25, to be published on Oct.01, will take up the same theme related to the exhibition and contemplate on the creative power generated by the differences and mixture of climates in Spain and Japan. We will attempt to discuss the influence of the energy bodies on art in countries with different cultures and climates, comparing Japan and Spain.
