December 24th, it is Christmas Eve. It is a day to celebrate Go-seitan (the nativity) of Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas to you all.
Now、I naturally said “Go-Sei-Tan (the nativity),” but when someone has a baby, don’t we celebrate “Go-Tan-Jo (the birth)”? Oops. “Sei, Jo (birth)” and “Tan (nativity)” are at opposite position, and both words are used in the same way, but what is the difference?
In fact, the critical difference between the two words is “whether or not the person is now deceased.” When a person is already dead is born, it is called “Sei-tan (nativity),” when something is born, whether a living person, a deceased person, a company, or an entity, it is called “Tan-jo (birth).”
Knowing this, I hear that idols nowadays sometimes hold birthday parties under the title of “So-&-So-chan’s Sei-tan Party”…..it seems a little scary (Laughs). Be careful not to say “Happy Go-Sei-tan” to a flesh-and-blood person.
