[Board Book: The Very Hungry Caterpillar] Written by: Eric Carle Translated by: Mori Hisashi

This time, though I know I shouldn’t be the one to say it but I would like to introduce the world-famous picture book, Board Book version of [The Very Hungry Caterpillar].

There are many adults who grew up reading [The Very Hungry Caterpillar]. The author Eric Carle published “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” in 1969 in USA、and published many other picture books, and this year he passed away at the age of 91. [The Very Hungry Caterpillar] was published in 1976 in Japan, and in 1983 when I was born it was already a bestseller picture book.

The story is a new born caterpillar eating various foods and growing up to be an adult, and together with the colorful illustration, it is amazingly winning the hearts of the children. I would like to recommend this book specially to the infants of 0~2 years of age. As it proceeds with a day of the week and expressing the sense of the time flow, and also showing that there are variety food stuffs, and the fundamental information such as the moon and the sun are included, so that they are expected to be the base of the knowledge of the infant.

And especially, when reading it to the baby, I would like to recommend a parent to memorize a song “Song of Very Hungry Caterpillar” in line with the picture book, and sing the song along with tuning the pages. Even though the baby does not understand the contents, by the joyous melody of the song, I think infant shall become attached to the book.

As [The Very Hungry Caterpillar ] is published in several book types, for the babies, I recommend thick paged Board book type. Because as infant may handle pages with all might of fingers or sometimes even bites it. Yet from the infancy, it is splendid to be able to sympathize with the book to the extent of becoming worn-out.
