BIOTEC Information
At the end of March 2025, Kodansha Editorial will publish a collection of waka poems entitled 『Misho』, which will include around 1,400 waka selected from the more than 5,000 waka that Shigyo Sosyu has been writing since his 50s, and will be a collection of around 600 pages. The dramatic course of his life itself is sung in all the waka, and this definitive book sublimates time and memories. It contains many waka about waka itself, as well as waka from memories of his youth, bushido, people he met, his family, and the art and philosophy. It is a rare, multifaceted collection of waka in the modern era, and includes long poems about shrines and temples as well as Japanese mythology.
As a guide for readers, the background and history of the waka, as well as the trajectory of Shigyo’s heart, are explained in the margins. In addition, supplementary explanations of the Makura kotoba and archaic words that are unfamiliar to modern people can be read on the same page, and there are many other touches that make the waka more three-dimensional, so we hope you will take a look. The dramatic cover design, which goes beyond the boundaries of a simple poetry collection, features photographs by the photographer and artist Tachihara Sei, which depicts flowing sand. Shigyo says the unique binding is made up by futuristic images reminiscent of ‘Mars’ and Abe Kobo’s [The Fourth Interglacial Period].

Epilogue
‘Isn’t human life myth itself? The origin of life is a myth. To look up to a myth. There is no other way to write a poem. All poems are spun from myths. They must fall to earth as tears born from myths.’
