Entitled [Larra in between Love and Death], life and works of the first journalist in Spain, Mariano José de Larra (1809-1837) will be published in Japan for the first time, in an independently-edited・first translation book in early April. Preface and recommendation by Shigyo Sosyu, translation by Abe Misaki.
Radical libertarian Larra (1809-1837) is said to be Spain’s first journalist. Larra, who had a great influence as a symbolic existence for intellectuals who formed patriotic philosophy and thought, including Unamuno. And he was born in war-torn Spain, which was invaded by the French Revolution・Napoleon’s army.
In order to improve the turbulent Spanish nation where established-conceptions were collapsing, he criticized the backwardness of politics, culture and mentality with fierce satire, and fought with a pen sword to enlighten the people. After that, he was embroiled in power struggle, lost an adulterous love, committed suicide with a pistol at the age of 27, and determined the later Spanish literature.
What Larra aimed for, and what Spanish philosophers under his influence aimed for, are infinitely close to “Spirituality Civilization.” That is why Spanish philosophy can be a bridge to the future.――— Shigyo Sosyu
